Fifth-seeded Gabriela Sabatini beat fourth-seeded Mary Joe Fernandez, 6-3, 6-4, today (Saturday) in Tokyo to advance to the final of the Toray Pan Pacific Open.

Sabatini, who upset No. 1 Steffi Graf, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6), in a 2 1/2-hour quarterfinal yesterday, meets No. 3 Martina Navratilova or No. 7 Laura Gildemeister for the title.

Sabatini said her match with Graf was one of the best they have played. Graf leads the series 20-6.

"I kept putting pressure on her and played aggressively even when I was down," Sabatini said.

Also yesterday, Fernandez beat Nana Miyagi, 6-0, 6-2; Gildemeister downed Kathy Rinaldi, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3; and Navratilova breezed past Robin White, 6-2, 6-3.

"I was nervous {Thursday} because it was my first tournament in three months," said Navratilova, who had knee surgery in November. "I played much smoother and more comfortably {yesterday}. I played on big points very well."
