GREENVILLE, N.C., FEB. 2 -- Brian Gilgeous had 20 points and 10 rebounds and Donald Grant's three-point basket with three minutes left gave American University the lead for good in a 63-60 victory over East Carolina in the Colonial Athletic Association tonight.

Grant's shot put the Eagles (9-9, 4-4) ahead, 59-58. Craig Sedmak made a layup with 1:50 left and Brock Wortman's foul shot with 1:32 to go capped American's scoring.

East Carolina came back on a 17-footer by Steve Richardson with 32 seconds left. Grant was fouled with 21 seconds left, but missed the front end of the one-and-one. The Pirates worked for the final shot, but two three-point tries by Robin House missed.
