Third-seeded Brad Gilbert and No. 7 Wally Masur fought off strong upset challenges to reach the semifinals of the Volvo-San Francisco tennis tournament last night.
Gilbert needed more than two hours to turn back Dan Goldie, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4. The eighth game in the battle went 24 points, the equivalent to six love games, before Gilbert prevailed.
Masur ousted David Pate, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (7-1), as the hard-serving and somewhat erratic Pate finally fell victim to his own errors in the tiebreaker. Pate previously upset No. 2 seed Andres Gomez.
Later, top-seeded Andre Agassi met Kevin Curren and No. 4 John McEnroe faced Darren Cahill.
Milan Indoor: Carl-Uwe Steeb defeated Aaron Krickstein, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), in the quarterfinals. Also moving into the semifinals were Jakob Hlasek, Alexander Volkov and hometown favorite Christiano Caratti.
Hlasek, the fifth seed, beat Jan Gunnarsson, 6-0, 7-6. No. 8 Volkov ousted Pat Cash, 6-4, 6-4, and will play Hlasek today in the semifinals.
Caratti breezed past Niklas Kulti, 6-3, 6-1, and earned a shot at Steeb. Caratti stunned top-seeded Ivan Lendl Thursday.
He received an ovation upon becoming only the third Italian to reach the semifinals of this tournament in its 14-year history.
Oslo Open: Top-seeded Sabine Appelmans and No. 2 Raffaella Reggi scored easy victories to reach the semifinals. Appelmans beat Nathalie Herreman, 6-2, 6-1, and Reggi beat Beate Reinstadler, 6-3, 6-4.
Catarina Lindqvist advanced when Catherine Tanvier retired in the second set with a knee injury.
