Miami Dolphins -- FB Brent Fullwood, who played one game for Cleveland last season before being waived, signed as free agent.


Daytona 500 -- Bobby Hillin Jr. led third and final round of time trials for NASCAR Grand National race in Daytona Beach, Fla. He drove second Moroso Oldsmobile to lap of 192.160 mph on 2.5-mile oval at Daytona International Speedway. Lap was 28th fastest overall and easily qualified him for one of Thursday's two 125-mile races that will help determine lineup for Sunday's 500-miler.


Capitol -- Chris Dixon became first player at Laurel school to score 1,000 career points when he had 31 against Eastern on Monday.

Catholic -- Freshman F Jay Jackson (St. Stephen's High School) was named ECAC co-rookie of week after scoring 47 points in games against Marymount and Mary Washington.

Reid Ryan, son of Nolan Ryan, baseball's all-time strikeout leader, made his collegiate debut for Texas and struck out the first batter he faced. In two innings of relief, he gave up two singles and one run and struck out two as No. 6 Longhorns beat Texas-Arlington, 10-3.

Virginia Commonwealth -- Said former Purdue basketball G Rich Mount will enroll. Mount, son of former Purdue all-American Rick Mount, must sit out the rest of this season and all of 1991-92.


Jill Trenary won't get a chance to defend her world title. Ankle injury that forced her out of this week's U.S. championships has made her withdraw from next month's world championships in Munich.
