Washington Capitals -- Will hold their fifth annual "Hardee's High School Media Day" on Friday at Capital Centre. Journalism students from Maryland, Washington, Northern Virginia and Baltimore public and private schools will be guests for lectures from journalists, and also will watch the team practice and interview players. COLLEGES

Metro Conference -- Met to discuss adding South Florida and North Carolina-Charlotte to the league, but came away saying more talks would be held on the subject. The Metro currently has four members -- Tulane, Louisville, Virginia Tech and Southern Mississippi. It recently lost four others when Florida State joined the ACC, South Carolina opted for the Southeastern Conference, and Cincinnati and Memphis State left for the newly formed Great Midwest Conference.

Marymount -- Time of Sunday's women's basketball game against Ferrum has been changed from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Bates College -- Jeremy Chase (Bethesda-Chevy Chase) has been named captain of baseball team at the Lewiston, Maine, school.

Navy -- Wayne Jang advanced to the quarterfinals of the Princeton (N.J.) Invitational tennis tournament He defeated seventh-seeded Todd Kjeldgaard of Dartmouth, 4-6, 7-6, 7-5.

BOXING

Lightweights -- Anthony Jones (26-1-1, 16 knockouts) will replace injured Tracy Spann against champion Pernell Whitaker Feb. 23 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Spann, ranked No. 1 by the IBF, suffered a 15-stitch cut over an eye while sparring Thursday.

Light heavyweights -- Virgil Hill's title defense against five-time champion Thomas Hearns has been moved to June 3 at Caesars Palace. The fight had been set for May 17.

FOOTBALL

New York Jets -- Named Foge Fazio linebackers coach and Al Roberts special teams coach.

CORRECTION

In yesterday's article on the Washington Capitals, one transaction was incorrect. Kelly Miller, Mike Ridley and Bob Crawford were traded by the Rangers to Washington in return for Bobby Carpenter and a second-round pick in 1989.
