The Penguins traded RW Tomas Sandstrom yesterday to the Red Wings for C Greg Johnson.
Sandstrom, 32, is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. He had nine goals and 15 assists in 40 games this season. Johnson, 25, had six goals and 10 assists in 43 games with the Red Wings.
IT HURTS: The Flyers said veteran C Dale Hawerchuk suffered a pulled rib cage muscle Saturday against Detroit and is questionable for tonight's game against the Coyotes.
LEETCH HONORED: Rangers D Brian Leetch was named NHL player of the week after leading the league with four goals and five assists in three games.
HART CHARGED: Former Islander Gerry Hart was arrested and charged with punching a referee and striking a 14-year-old player during a hockey tournament last weekend.
Hart, who played 15 seasons in the NHL with the Islanders and three other teams, was charged with two counts of simple assault, a misdemeanor.
Hart, who was coaching a Suffolk County (N.Y.) Police Athletic League team, told the New York Times the charges were exaggerated and that he never punched the opposing player. Hart said after a player spit at him, "I did the protective thing -- I put my hand up."
MOVING ON: The Stars returned backup G Roman Turek to their International Hockey League affiliate in Michigan, ending the team's three-goalie rotation. Turek, 26, a rookie, had been sharing time with starting G Andy Moog and fellow backup G Arturs Irbe, going 3-1-0 with a 2.22 goals-against average in five games. . . . The Sharks recalled D Chris Lipuma from their AHL affiliate in Kentucky, two days after trading D Michal Sykora.
