MOVES: The Chargers assured themselves of picking either Peyton Manning or Ryan Leaf in April's NFL draft, but the price to move up from the third spot to the Cardinals' second spot was steep. The Cardinals get the Chargers' first- and second-round picks this year and their 1999 first-round pick. They also received star PR Eric Metcalf and LB Patrick Sapp. The Colts have the first pick.
"There are two quarterbacks in this draft and I think the consensus of opinion is that two guys like that don't come along very often," Chargers GM Bobby Beathard said. "If we're going to be successful in getting that type of quarterback, we're going to have to give up something, and we really did." . . . The Jets signed QB Glenn Foley to a one-year contract extension, preventing him from becoming an unrestricted free agent after next season. The Jets also traded FB Lorenzo Neal to the Buccaneers for an undisclosed 1998 draft pick -- giving the team eight picks in the seven-round draft -- and signed DE Anthony Pleasant. CLEVELAND EXPANDS?: NFL officials toured Cleveland's stadium construction site and said the city is likely to get an expansion franchise rather than a relocated team.
