Stern John scored three goals within 22 minutes in the second half as the host Columbus Crew routed the expansion Miami Fusion, 5-1, in a Major League Soccer match before 12,636 at Ohio Stadium. John's three goals, the first hat trick in MLS this season, were his first career goals for the Crew (4-1).
Columbus, with 12 points, is now four points ahead of second-place D.C. United (4-2) in the Eastern Conference. With Columbus holding a 1-0 lead, John scored his first goal three minutes into the second half off of a cross from fellow Trinidadian, defender Ansil Elcock. Three minutes later, Dan Stebbins scored for Miami (3-3) to cut the lead to 2-1, but John got his second goal in the 56th minute off a neat pass from Brian Maisonneuve. John completed his scoring in the 70th minute. GALAXY 2, WIZARDS 1: Mauricio Cienfuegos drove home a penalty kick in the 89th minute as visiting Los Angeles (5-0) increased its lead in the Western Conference to seven points over second-place Kansas City. Cobi Jones scored the Galaxy's first goal, his fourth, in the 44th minute. Paul Rideout tied it for the Wizards (2-3) in the 72nd minute. CLASH 2, BURN 1: Victor Mella and Lawrence Lozzano scored second-half goals to lead San Jose (2-3) to a comeback win over host Dallas (3-2) at the Cotton Bowl.
