The No. 4 Robinson girls soccer team scored more goals against No. 1 West Springfield last night than the Spartans had allowed in their previous 17 games. Senior Lindsey Rosen, sophomore Jamie Baer and senior Alison Davies scored for the Rams, whose 3-2 victory at Stuart earned them what Coach Jim Rike called the most surprising of their six straight Virginia AAA Northern Region championships.
The Burke school will host Patrick Henry of Roanoke in a state quarterfinal game Tuesday.
In the boys final, Oakton senior midfielder Steve Heitkamp scored the go-ahead goal in the 50th minute to lead the third-ranked Cougars to a 3-1 victory over W.T. Woodson. Senior All-Met Kenny Arena scored on a 21-yard free kick in the 16th minute for Oakton (19-1-1) and senior Carlos Munoz added an insurance goal in the 65th minute. The lone goal for W.T. Woodson (12-6-1) was scored in the 50th minute when Oakton defender Matt Friedman inadvertently headed the ball past his goalkeeper, Mike Pregnall.
For Oakton, it was the first region title in boys soccer in the Vienna school's 33-year history.
The girls game was the first loss of the season for West Springfield (17-1), which had allowed one goal each to Langley and Wakefield this season. The Spartans had shut out Robinson (18-2) in two previous meetings this season.
"It is a great honor to score against them because their defense is so good," said Davies, whose 49th minute strike during a scramble in front of the net made the score 3-1. "Their whole team is really awesome."
The Spartans will travel to No. 2 Woodbridge Tuesday for a state quarterfinal game. "This is a reality check for all of us," West Springfield senior Colleen McIlwrath said. "We had never been behind in a game this season, so when they scored we were kind of like, `what to we do?' We started to come back at the end, but we needed to play like that the whole game."
