West Springfield sophomore forward Casey McCluskey does not remember the most important goal in today's Virginia AAA state soccer semifinal match against Princess Anne.
"I stuck my head out and I hoped I hit [the ball], but I did not even see it go in the net," McCluskey said. "I was stunned."
McCluskey scored two goals and had an assist, including the unforgettable game-winner with 15 minutes 37 seconds remaining, to lead the second-ranked Spartans to a 3-2 victory over the Virginia Beach school at Old Dominion University.
West Springfield (19-1) will play in the state final for the first time since 1995. The Spartans have already won four titles this decade (1991, '92, '93 and '95), and will try to add one more when they play top-ranked Robinson here for the fourth time this season Saturday at 2 p.m.
Princess Anne (19-3-0) became only the second team this season to score more than one goal against the Spartans, but it was not enough. After Princess Anne fouled sophomore midfielder Nicole Blume about three feet outside the penalty area on the left side, senior stopper Colleen McIlwrath lined the ball to the far post, where McCluskey headed it off the inside of the right post for the game-winner.
