Coach: Cheryl Miller

1998 record: 19-11 l 2nd in West l Lost to Houston in final

Phoenix has been without the services of Coach Cheryl Miller much of the preseason while she finishes up her NBA broadcasting duties. In her stead, the team has been led by assistant coach Carrie Graf. Last season, the Mercury nearly prevented Houston from repeating as WNBA champions. They hope the addition of key ABL players will give them enough talent to claim their own title. Jennifer Gillom, a first-team all-WNBA selection, reported to camp 20 pounds lighter than last season. Gillom was second in the league in scoring (20.8 points per game) and fifth in rebounds (7.3 per game). Edna Campbell, a 1997 ABL all-star for the Colorado Xplosion, brings dependable perimeter shooting to the team. She will battle Bridget Pettis for a starting spot. Michele Timms, who suffered through bouts of inconsistency last season, has played well during the preseason. She recently was named captain of Australia's Olympic team. Clarissa Davis-Wrightsil played on the Texas team that defeated Miller's USC team for the national championship. Despite that, Miller said she has a good chance of working her way into the starting lineup.
