Larry Storck defeated defending champion Justin Klein yesterday on the second day of the Maryland State Golf Association's 78th annual men's amateur championship.
Storck, a former winner of the competition, beat Klein, 3 and 2, in the first round of the single elimination match-play tournament at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville.
Storck fell to Stu Strang in yesterday afternoon's second round. Strang defeated Storck, 5 and 3, to advance to today's quarterfinal round.
The semifinals also will be played today, with the 36-hole championship scheduled for Sunday.
Marty West, who has won the amateur nine times, also was eliminated after he lost to Rick Riddle, 3 and 2, in the second round.
Kenny Doerrer, the medalist in Thursday's qualifier, reached the quarterfinals by defeating Dan Riskam, 3 and 2.
Mike Albus, a recent Naval Academy graduate, also advanced by beating Kirk Lombardi, 4 and 3.
