Ten-time track and field champion Suziann Reid of the University of Texas was named the Big 12 female athlete of the year.
Reid, a graduate of Eleanor Roosevelt High, closed her college career as one of the most accomplished 400-meter runners in NCAA history. She accumulated 10 individual and relay national titles and is the only woman and just the second athlete in NCAA history to run on four straight national champion relays.
TICKETS ON HOLD: Virginia Tech has suspended individual ticket sales for its football home opener against Syracuse on Oct. 15. No individual tickets will be sold to that game until the students have an opportunity to pick up their tickets. Tickets will be made available to the public Oct. 4.
CHARGED?: Indiana basketball coach Bob Knight likely will learn Monday if he will face assault charges, but the prosecutor has questioned the credibility of the accuser. Knight is accused of making a racist remark in a restaurant near the campus Monday, then choking a patron in the parking lot and challenging him to fight.
CHARGED: Dontae Jones, who played briefly in the NBA after leading Mississippi State to the Final Four, was arrested yesterday in Nashville in connection with a shooting that wounded seven people. He was charged with reckless endangerment and felony vandalism.
MOVES: Kentucky C Michael Bradley, who set a school record for field goal percentage last season, has transferred to Villanova.
