SS Alex Gonzalez of the Blue Jays had surgery on his right shoulder yesterday and will miss the remainder of the season. He won't even begin to throw until October.

The injury has limited Gonzalez to 38 games this season. He was batting .292 with 13 doubles, two home runs and 12 RBI.

DUNSTON SITS: Shawon Dunston of the Cardinals dropped his appeal and began serving a three-game suspension last night. Dunston was penalized for charging the mound and starting a brawl against the Dodgers on May 23. . . . The Cardinals optioned rookie OF J.D. Drew, healthy after a rehab stint, to Class AAA Memphis to allow him to continue to work on his stroke. . . . They also placed LHP Lance Painter on the 15-day disabled list with a strained shoulder.

IN THEIR FUTURES: The Bowie Baysox' Matt Riley and fellow Orioles minor leaguer Calvin Pickering will be among those participating in the first All-Star Futures Game. The game, which will be played July 11 at Boston's Fenway Park as part of All-Star Game festivities, will pit a U.S. team against a team of world all-stars. Riley will pitch for the U.S. team, and Virgin Islands native Pickering, who plays for Rochester, is on the world roster. Former Potomac Cannons Rick Ankiel and Adam Kennedy also will play for the U.S. team.
