Chad Paronto held Lynchburg to four hits and one walk while striking out eight over seven innings today as the Frederick Keys coasted to a 6-0 Class A Carolina League victory over the Hillcats before 3,323 at Harry Grove Stadium.
The victory was the eighth in nine games for the Keys (37-33), who will finish second in the Northern Division heading into the season's second half.
Paronto (2-3) was demoted from Class AA Bowie on May 20 but Keys Manager Andy Etchebarren said Paronto has shown a marked improvement in his mechanics. Etchebarren credited his starting pitching with sparking the team's recent surge.
"When your starting pitching takes you deep, your bullpen does better because you've got better matchups," he said.
Three Keys players -- catcher Jayson Werth, shortstop Eddy Martinez and outfielder Luis Matos -- will represent the Carolina League in Tuesday's all-star game against the California League in Lake Elsinore, Calif.
Matos was 1 for 4 against Lynchburg (35-34) today with three RBI. His double to left-center field drove in Eddy Garabito, Darnell McDonald and Brian Rust to cap the scoring in Frederick's six-run sixth.
Lynchburg starter Carlos Alvarado loaded the bases with walks in the sixth. He was removed for Matt Minter, who walked in Werth with the first run. Martinez's sacrifice fly and McDonald's bunt scored Roberto Rivera and Ivanon Coffie, respectively.
