Organizers and coaches involved with next month's Super 44 High School All-Star Football Game got together yesterday to try to drum up support -- and animosity -- for the revamped event.

Formerly known as the Chesapeake Classic, the Super 44, like its predecessor, will pit graduated seniors from Maryland and Virginia. But with this year's game set to be played in a cozy high school setting after years at the University of Maryland's Byrd Stadium, organizers are hoping the smaller venue will heighten the rivalry between the states.

"We want to create the Hatfields versus the McCoys, the Skins versus the Cowboys," said ex-Redskin Rick "Doc" Walker, appointed the game's first director of football operations. "I want some friction. I think we can create that atmosphere that kids never forget about, that they'll always look back to that game as being special."

The all-star game, which annually drew only several thousand fans to 48,000-seat Byrd Stadium, will be played July 24 at W.T. Woodson High in Fairfax, a facility that seats 12,000. The 6 p.m. kickoff is 90 minutes earlier than previous starts.

The Maryland team includes four players from Suitland and four from Paint Branch. Maryland Coach Steve Harward, from C.M. Wright High in Bel Air, indicates that the defensive line, which includes Florida State-bound Darnell Dockett from Paint Branch, could be his team's greatest strength. That line might trouble a Virginia team that will play without three top linemen who are headed to military academies and will be unavailable for the game.

Episcopal quarterback Bryson Spinner, a University of Virginia signee, will lead the Virginia team.

Maryland has won the past two games to even the series 3-3.
