Stern John had a goal and an assist and Mark Dougherty set a Major League Soccer record for victories by a goalkeeper as the Columbus Crew beat the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, 2-1, last night in Columbus, Ohio.
Dougherty yielded a goal to Todd Yeagley in the 80th minute en route to his 44th career victory, one more than Dallas's Mark Dodd.
John gave Columbus a 1-0 lead when Brian McBride one-timed a pass to him in the penalty area, leaving him an open shot on goalkeeper Tim Howard.
Columbus (9-5) took a 2-0 lead in the 68th minute when John dropped a pass to Brian Maisonneuve, who drove a shot from 20 yards past Howard for his first goal this season.
The MetroStars (4-10) have lost six straight.
CLASH 2, FUSION 1: Raul Diaz Arce broke an 11-game scoring drought with a first-half header that lifted San Jose to a 2-1 victory over host Miami. Diaz Arce, Major League Soccer's career leading scorer entering this season, broke a 1-1 tie in the 35th minute by heading home a cross from El Salvador countryman Ronald Cerritos. It was only the second goal this season for Diaz Arce, who came to the Clash from New England before the season.
BURN 2, REVOLUTION 0: Midfielder Jorge Rodriguez scored the game-winner and forward Jason Kreis added a free-kick goal in the 90th minute as host Dallas won. The Burn is 7-1 at home this season and has outscored opponents 18-4 at the Cotton Bowl. New England (7-7) lost for the first time ever in Dallas. Goalkeeper Matt Jordan stopped three shots for the Burn, which improved to 9-7.
RAPIDS 2, FIRE 0: Jorge Dely Valdes notched his third straight game-winning goal as host Colorado struck twice in the final six minutes to defeat Chicago. The Rapids (10-3) won for the 10th time in 11 games and retained first place in the Western Conference. Chicago, the defending MLS champion, has won just twice in its last eight games.
