The Padres purchased the contract of veteran 2B Carlos Baerga from Class AAA Las Vegas, the team said.

Baerga, 30, hit .286 with two home runs and nine runs batted in during 21 games with Las Vegas since signing with the Padres last month. He'd already been with the Cardinals and Reds organizations this year.

He was originally signed by San Diego as an undrafted free agent in 1986, then was traded to the Indians in 1989. He made the all-star team three times with Cleveland. The Indians traded him to the Mets in 1996.

DODGERS PENALIZED: Two Cubans in the Dodgers' minor league system have been released from their contracts by Commissioner Bud Selig, who found they were improperly signed. 1B Juan Diaz and OF Josue Perez were declared free agents, as they had requested on the grounds that the Dodgers had kept them from seeking fair contracts.

MOVES: Knuckleballer Tom Candiotti, 41, signed with the Indians. He has a career 150-163 record in 16 seasons and pitched previously for the Indians from 1986 to 1991. . . . The Cardinals activated P Lance Painter (strained shoulder) and placed OF Eric Davis (sore shoulder) on the 15-day disabled list. The Cardinals also said OF J.D. Drew will be recalled this week.
