Magicalmysterycat defeated She's Classy by three lengths to win today's $103,096 Landaluce Stakes, giving trainer Wayne Lukas his sixth victory in the Grade II race at Hollywood Park.
Magicalmysterycat, ridden by Chris Antley, covered six furlongs in 1 minute 11 seconds and paid $4 and $2.60. She's Classy returned $2.80 to place. There was no show wagering because of the four-horse field. Princes Melissa was another length back in third and Desert End was fourth.
"Her natural speed was good enough to get the lead," Antley said. "Right now, of all the 2-year-old fillies who have shown themselves, she's right near the top. So far, her ability has been enough to keep her unbeaten."
The victory, worth $63,120, increased Magicalmysterycat's career earnings to $132,780. She's undefeated in three races.
Lukas won the Landaluce, renamed for the undefeated filly he trained, for the sixth time and first since he saddled Serena's Song in 1994. Landaluce died of a blood disorder in 1983 and is buried in the track's infield. She won the race, then called the Hollywood Lassie Stakes, by 21 lengths in 1983 and set the stakes record of 1:08.
"She was probably the most brilliant horse we've ever been around," Lukas said. "Every once in a while when we're feeling a little down, we plug in that old tape and watch her waltz down through there like she did in this race."
