Hylton High School, considered a rising Cardinal District boys basketball program after losing just one starter from last season's team, yesterday named nine-year Potomac (Va.) assistant Dan Kearney its new coach.

Kearney, 33, coached on Potomac teams that reached the Virginia AAA state championship three of the past five seasons. The Panthers won the state title in 1995.

Hylton, a rival of Potomac in the Cardinal District, went 8-13 last season. Kearney, a former graduate assistant under Lefty Driesell at James Madison University, replaces Ed Holstrom, who resigned after five seasons to take a job with the state's Department of Education.
