Ann Hinsberg is one member of the Bowie Baysox front office who's in Mobile, Ala., to watch different parts of tonight's Class AA All-Star Game. Although she's a baseball fan, Hinsberg will have other things on her mind than just enjoying the game.
The Baysox will host next year's Class AA All-Star Game, and Hinsberg is the event's coordinator. She's going to be gathering ideas in an effort to make the 2000 game special.
"I want to see everything from registration to what people do in their spare time to the different decor they use and the parties they have," Hinsberg said. "I'm just taking a notebook."
The 2000 All-Star Game will be at Prince George's Stadium July 12, at 7:05 p.m., and will be aired on ESPN2. Bowie was awarded the game at last year's all-star event in West Haven, Conn. The franchise began planning for the game shortly thereafter; Hinsberg already spends about 75 percent of her time on the task.
"It's been fun, and I've enjoyed every minute of it," Hinsberg said. "There's a lot of energy coming from it."
Bowie General Manager Jon Danos said hosting the All-Star Game will help the Baysox familiarize fans with the team and could become helpful to the franchise in the years ahead.
"I think it'll bring awareness of our ballclub and our ballpark," Danos said. "We think that an event of this magnitude, much like the Orioles exhibition game [a sellout at Prince George's Stadium last year], will be a [plus]."
Hinsberg said the club wants to involve children in the event, and may invite Little League players to have some role. Tickets for the game should go on sale in January. Danos and his club already are eagerly anticipating the event.
"We want to pull out all the stops," Danos said. "We want to show what minor league baseball is all about. The spotlight will be on us, and that's [great]."
