BURNITZ OUT: The Brewers placed all-star OF Jeromy Burnitz on the 15-day disabled list yesterday with a broken right hand.

Burnitz was hit by a pitch from the Royals' Jose Rosado during Milwaukee's 11-3 win over the Royals on Saturday night. X-rays showed a broken fifth metacarpal bone in his right hand. RHP Rocky Coppinger, acquired Friday from the Orioles, reported to the team and filled the roster spot.

Burnitz is hitting .273, with 26 home runs and 73 RBI. . . .

Indians RHP Jaret Wright, who left yesterday's loss to Houston with tightness in his right shoulder blade, is being sent to Cleveland to be evaluated, club officials said. Wright will be looked at today by team orthopedic doctor Louis Keppler.

NEW KID IN TOWN: Tomokazu Ohka, a Japanese RHP with an 11-0 minor league record in his first pro season in the United States, was called up by the Red Sox. Ohka is scheduled to make his first major league start tonight against the Marlins. After pitching last season in Japan, he was 8-0 with a 3.00 ERA at Class AA Trenton and 3-0 with a 0.78 ERA at AAA Pawtucket.

OBITUARY: Whitlow Wyatt, a star pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers, died Friday at 91. Wyatt died at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, Ga., of complications from pneumonia.

A native of Kensington, Ga., the right-hander had a 106-95 record in 16 seasons with the Tigers, White Sox, Indians, Dodgers and Phillies.
