Edwin Gorter scored on a 30-yard free kick in the 84th minute to lift Miami to a 1-0 victory over the struggling New York/New Jersey MetroStars yesterday in East Rutherford, N.J.

Gorter's second goal of the season sailed into the upper right corner of the net after MetroStars midfielder Mike Sorber had fouled Welton.

The Fusion is 7-12 with 17 points in the MLS Eastern Conference. The MetroStars have lost three straight.

The MetroStars, who have the fewest goals scored and most goals allowed in MLS, have a league-low nine points.

The MetroStars debuted two new foreign players in Colombian striker Henry Zambrano and Yugoslavian midfielder Sasa Curcic, but couldn't generate much offense.

CREW 4, BURN 1: Jeff Cunningham had a goal and an assist as host Columbus closed within four points of D.C. United in the Eastern Conference.

Cunningham put Columbus up 2-0 after collecting a shot by Stern John that ricocheted off Dallas defender Eric Dade and shooting it past Burn goalkeeper Matt Jordan in the 42nd minute.

In the 50th minute, Cunningham sent a cross at the top of the box to John, who scored on a left-foot shot to make it 3-0. Crew defender Mike Lapper also assisted on the play.
