Notre Dame and football coach Bob Davie have reached agreement on a contract extension that will keep him at the helm of the Irish program through the 2003 season.

The South Bend Tribune reported that executive vice president E. William Beauchamp and Athletic Director Mike Wadsworth worked out the agreement with Davie, whose contract was to expire after the 2001 season.

Davie signed the original deal when he took over before the 1997 season.

RIDE ON: Ashley Howard is a varsity athlete at Fresno State, yet as one of the school's equestrian team members, Howard lives in obscurity.

"It's not really well known," she said. "When I wear an equestrian team T-shirt around campus, there are quite a few people who say, `What's that?" '

The sport's anonymity could come to an end on Aug. 1 when the NCAA officially recognizes it as a sport, a classification aimed at helping some schools meet Title IX requirements without having to drop existing men's sports.

Because a large number of women make up an equestrian team, schools can more easily meet NCAA requirements designed to give women and men equal opportunities, said Irene Harris, Fresno State's faculty equestrian supervisor.
