Reserve Saul Martinez scored two goals in the second half last night as the Miami Fusion defeated New York/New Jersey, 2-0, for the MetroStars' fifth consecutive loss.

The Fusion (9-13, 21 points) moved into third place in the Eastern Conference with its fifth victory in six games. The MetroStars (5-15, nine points) have lost 11 of 12 heading into Wednesday's home game against D.C. United.

Martinez, a Honduran forward making his eighth appearance of the year, scored in the 46th minute on a breakaway against goalkeeper Mike Ammann. Ten minutes later, he scored again by beating three defenders. Before last night, he didn't have a goal or an assist.

Miami's leading scorer, Diego Serna, hurt his knee last week and will miss the remainder of the year.

The MetroStars, who have 17 goals all season, have been shut out in four consecutive games for a league-record scoreless streak of 366 minutes.
