DEER OPTIONS: Managed deer hunts are scheduled for this fall at the Army's Blossom Point research facility near La Plata and the Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge in Woodbridge.

The hunts at Blossom Point will be Nov. 2, 29 and 30 and Dec. 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 11. Thirty hunters a day will be chosen by lottery. Participants will be required to demonstrate shotgun proficiency. Send name, work and home phone and address on a 3-by-5 card by Sept. 24 to Commander, Adelphi Lab Center, 2800 Powder Mill Rd., Adelphi, Md. 20783-1197 (Attn. Bob Wardwell). The drawing will be held Sept. 29.

The fee for those who hunt will be $15. The shotgun hunts at Mason Neck are Nov. 29 to 30 and Dec. 13 to 14. Send 3-by-5 applications and $5 nonrefundable check or money order made out to USFWS by Sept. 4 to Mason Neck NWR, 14344 Jefferson Davis Hwy., Woodbridge, Va. 22191. The card must have full name (no initials), address, phone number and check or money order number. A separate hunt for the mobility impaired is planned with no fee; write "MI" where the check number would go.

STAIRWAY: The Canoe Cruisers Association plans a trip for lower-intermediate paddlers down the Shenandoah Staircase at Harpers Ferry on Saturday. The leader will be Kathleen Sengstock, 301-270-6267.

SPEAK UP: Virginia officials will hold a public hearing on proposed waterfowl seasons and regulations at 7 p.m. Monday at the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries in Richmond.

FIRST CALL: The ninth annual Call of the Wild Hunting and Fishing Show runs Friday through Sunday at Frederick Fairgrounds in Frederick, Md. Hours are noon to 8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

GEARING DOWN: Pennsylvania's Fish & Boat Commission will decrease the daily creel limit for trout from eight fish to five next year. The new rules will apply during the regular season, April 11 to Labor Day 2000; the daily limit remains three during the extended season, which runs from the day after Labor Day through February.
