The Virginia men's basketball team will play South Carolina, Virginia Tech, Minnesota and St. John's in non-conference games during the 1999-2000 season.

The Cavaliers, whose schedule was released yesterday, will face the Gamecocks in the first round of the Puerto Rico Shootout in San Juan Nov. 25-27. In addition to its regular Atlantic Coast Conference schedule, Virginia also will face non-conference opponents Elon, VMI, Loyola (Md.), Belmont, Dartmouth, Hampton and Richmond. The schedule can be found on Page D8.

TERPS NO. 2: The Maryland men's soccer team, which advanced to the NCAA semifinals last season, was ranked No. 2 nationally when Soccer America released its preseason polls for men's and women's soccer. Defending national champion Indiana was ranked No. 1 and no other area men's teams made the top 20.

For the first time on the women's side, Soccer America ranked a team other than North Carolina in the top spot -- Santa Clara. Virginia, ranked 14th, was the only area women's team in the top 20.

HARDEMAN BACK: Running back D'Andre "Tiki" Hardeman, whose grade problems forced Texas A&M to forfeit a victory last season, rejoined the Aggies.

Hardeman, a senior, was declared academically ineligible and disqualified for the season last September after already playing in two games -- a loss to Florida State and a victory over Southwestern Louisiana in which he scored three touchdowns.
