Maryland football coach Ron Vanderlinden said yesterday that he might wait until the season opener against Temple on Sept. 2 to announce who will start at quarterback.
"If Temple didn't know who our starter is it would be an advantage for us, I think," Vanderlinden said. "I don't have a timetable."
Sophomore Randall Jones and redshirt freshman Calvin McCall have been splitting time in practice, although McCall appears to be getting more time with the first unit than in previous practices, something that started when Jones was out with an arm injury.
Jones missed four days of practice with a sore passing arm and struggled when he returned last week, giving McCall an opportunity to demonstrate his skills.
"Calvin kind of caught him and went past him a little bit, but Randall is [coming back]," Vanderlinden said. "Randall's just now getting back to his spring form."
Vanderlinden also ended speculation that true freshman Latrez Harrison would start the opener. Vanderlinden said he would like to avoid such a situation because it would be a difficult experience for a freshman.
Terrapins Note: Offensive lineman Todd Wike suffered a broken bone in his hand in Saturday's intrasquad scrimmage and will be sidelined indefinitely.
