Astros OF Richard Hidalgo, on the disabled list since Aug. 9, needs surgery on his left knee and will miss the rest of the season.

Hidalgo, one of 13 Astros on the disabled list this season, has inflammation resulting from loose cartilage. The Astros said it was caused by a congenital condition that caused the kneecap not to properly join together. He will have the operation today in Houston.

Hidalgo, 24, hit .227 this season with 15 homers and 56 RBI. He also has 15 outfield assists.

Astros OFs Derek Bell (left groin) and Moises Alou (left knee surgery) also are on the disabled list, and Alou may not play at all this season as a result of a treadmill accident prior to spring training.

SIDELINED: Braves RHP Greg Maddux will miss his scheduled start Friday against the Cardinals after chipping a bone in his right wrist. Maddux injured his right wrist diving for a foul ball against the Padres on Saturday. . . .

Braves RHP Rudy Seanez will miss up to eight weeks with a stress fracture in his pitching elbow, the team said. Seanez, 30, is 6-1 with three saves and a 3.35 ERA. In 53 2/3 innings, he has struck out 41 batters and walked 21. He has appeared in 56 games, second-most on the staff behind closer John Rocker. The Braves recalled RHP David Cortes from Class AAA Richmond.

SUSPENDED: Angel Pena, once the Dodgers' top catching prospect, has been suspended for seven games by Los Angeles for breaking team rules. Pena, who was sent down to Class AAA Albuquerque on July 31, began the suspension on Sunday. Pena, the Dodgers' minor league player of the year in 1998, started 36 games for Los Angeles this season, hitting .208 with four homers and 21 RBI.

ACTIVATED: The Cubs activated RHP Rick Aguilera from the 15-day disabled list. Aguilera, 37, had been on the DL since Aug. 1 with a strained right calf.
