Mike McLeese, the former Howard University and Dunbar High School basketball coach, has been hired as the head men's basketball coach and athletic director at the University of the District of Columbia, President Julius F. Nimmons Jr. announced yesterday.
McLeese replaces Wil Jones, who left after 20 years to go to Norfolk State. Jones was 234-145 at UDC, including a 14-12 record last season.
Since leaving the college coaching ranks last year, McLeese has coached the local United States Basketball League franchise, the Washington Congressionals, and served as the director of basketball operations for the National Rookie League. He guided the Congressionals to a 17-9 record and the playoffs in 1998 before resigning earlier this year.
WOMEN'S SOCCER: Goalkeeper Sarah Wilson stopped back-to-back point-blank shots in the first half and senior defender Tara Refo scored her first collegiate goal to lead host Navy past George Mason, 2-0. . . . Freshman Maureen McCartney had two goals as Georgetown opened its season with a 6-1 win over St. Peter's at Harbin Field.
KICKED OUT OF KICKOFF CLASSIC: Ohio State linebackers Courtland Bullard (suspended for violating team rules) and Chris Kirk (academic problems) will not play in Sunday's Kickoff Classic against Miami (Fla.).
