Though Park View High quarterback Nick Smith set two school passing records last fall, Patriots Coach Mickey Thompson listed him as a running back on the roster during the season. Prior to the Patriots' 48-0 victory over Sherando before 1,200 in a Virginia nonleague game in Sterling last night, Smith convinced Thompson to list him as a quarterback -- then proved his point by completing 6 of 9 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns.
Smith suffered a sprained left ankle last week in a scrimmage against Chantilly and did not start last night. He entered the game on Park View's fifth play, and four plays later completed a 39-yard touchdown pass to junior Dustin Dudinski to give Park View a 6-0 lead.
Smith set school records for most passing yards in a game (233 against Potomac Falls) last season and most touchdowns (11). But in the team's single-wing offense -- which was popular in the 1920s and 1930s and allows any of the four players in the backfield to take the snap from center and act as the quarterback -- most of the team's non-linemen are listed as running backs.
"I really wanted to be listed as a quarterback and maybe it did put a little pressure on me," said Smith, the only quarterback on the roster. "But I like when teams put eight or nine men to stop our running game and do not expect us to pass. It gives me a chance to show what I can do."
Park View (1-0) finished 10-2 last season and won the AAA Liberty District title. When the school's enrollment dropped last year, however, they were re-classified in the smaller AA for this season.
Senior fullback Nelson Stickley rushed for a game-high 134 yards and two touchdowns and also had an interception while Park View's defense held Sherando (0-1) to 166 yards of total offense.
"We have a great running attack and a crazy defense," said Dudinski, who also caught a 45-yard scoring pass from Smith. "With Nick's passing I think we could have a really, really good year."
