MITCHELL ARRESTED: Kevin Mitchell, the 1989 National League MVP, was arrested for investigation of felony battery after being accused of hitting his father during a dispute yesterday, a police spokesman said.

Mitchell, 37, was said to have slapped or punched Earl Mitchell, 56, who suffered a one-inch cut to his head, San Diego police spokesman Dave Cohen said.

The elder Mitchell and his wife were being evicted from a house they rented from Kevin Mitchell and his grandmother in a neighborhood southeast of downtown San Diego, Cohen said.

The dispute apparently was over failure to pay rent.
