Senior Clifford Dukes scored three touchdowns in the second half as Great Mills snapped its 13-game losing streak with a 20-13 victory last night over host Southern.

Dukes scored on a 17-yard run in the third quarter and on six- and 16-yard runs in the fourth to give the Hornets (1-0) their first victory since Oct. 20, 1997, when they beat Chopticon, 22-6.

Dukes was strong on both sides of the ball, finishing with 110 yards rushing and 14 tackles on defense.

Roy Olson added 12 tackles and Jerimiah Porter had an interception for the Hornets.

Great Mills's John Blades added 52 yards on seven carries.

Southern (0-1) held the lead after three quarters on a pair of five-yard runs by Brian Armstrong and Pat Downing.

* NORTHWEST 19, QUINCE ORCHARD 14: Ray Custis's 43-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter provided the difference as host Northwest won its Montgomery County opener in Germantown.

Custis rushed for 111 yards on 14 carries and added four receptions--including one for a touchdown--for 52 yards to lead the Jaguars.

Quarterback Brian Shaw threw for two touchdowns in the second quarter, including a 21-yard pass to wide receiver George Hackey and a 14-yarder to Custis.

Northwest's defense picked off two passes, including one by French Pope as time expired in the fourth quarter. Linebacker Mike Theberge added nine tackles for the Jaguars.

Paul Lucas rushed for 155 yards on 19 carries for Quince Orchard and scored two second-half touchdowns on runs of four and seven yards.

* MAGRUDER 21, WHITMAN 0: Senior tailback Allan Mayberry rushed for two touchdowns as host Magruder won its Montgomery County 4A opener.

Mayberry carried the ball 28 times for 173 yards and scored on runs of two and four yards to help the Colonels (1-0) gain revenge on Whitman (0-1) for a 34-6 loss last season. Fullback Matt Harrington added a touchdown in the third quarter on an 18-yard pass from Amaha Tekalign.

Tackle Matt Rudden anchored the Magruder defense with two sacks and four tackles for losses. Safety Drew Stafford added an interception.

* CALVERT 41, BLAKE 0: Sean Mizzer rushed for three touchdowns and added another on a punt return as host Calvert shut out Blake.

Mizzer scored three times in the first quarter, on a 63-yard punt return and runs of 13 and 12 yards. The junior tailback added a 51-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and finished with 157 yards on 10 carries.
