For the first time, Virginia Tech will assess a $5-per-car fee to use the campus parking lots when the No. 11 Hokies open their 1999 season at home today against James Madison.
Tom Gabbard, associate athletic director, said Virginia Tech has been publicizing the fee for a year and has received only a few objections. The university expects to make as much as $170,000 this season from the fee and will use it to fund women's athletic scholarships.
Seventeen parking lots with 10,000 spaces will be subject to the $5 fee, in addition to game tickets that cost up $25 each. Faculty and students will not be charged the fee.
VERDICTS: A jury found a former North Carolina State wrestler innocent of involuntary manslaughter yesterday but guilty of breaking and entering the house of another student who had fired a gun into an off-campus party.
Clyde "Billy" Blunt, 20, faced the most serious charge levied against 10 former N.C. State athletes involved in an incident last November that ended in the death of Neil Davis Jr. at Davis's home. Davis, 21, of Fayetteville, died of a gunshot wound after his handgun discharged during a melee.
