Michael Jones ran for two touchdowns and Hampton, ranked No. 9 in Division I-AA, held Delaware State to 72 yards in a 21-0 victory yesterday in Hampton, Va.
Hampton (1-0, 1-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) gained 322 rushing yards and held Delaware State to nine. The Hornets (0-1, 0-1) managed just four first downs.
Deon Hunt led the Pirates with 11 tackles, seven unassisted, and Michael Bland had two of Hampton's five sacks.
Jones scored on runs of three yards in the first quarter and 17 yards in the fourth. Montrell Coley added a 26-yard scoring run in the third quarter and finished with 154 yards on 17 carries.
Hampton plays Howard next Saturday in the Greater Washington Urban League Classic at RFK Stadium.
BUCKNELL 37, MORGAN STATE 10: LaMario Bradwell rushed for 94 yards and a touchdown and Corey Hurley caught four passes for a career-high 92 yards to lead the Bison to the nonconference win in Lewisburg, Pa.
Jason Marrow scored on two short runs, Mark Wyland added an 11-yard touchdown run and Bradwell had a 42-yard touchdown run as the Bison compiled 339 yards.
Bucknell quarterback Don McDowell threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Jim Horan and place kicker Joe Lourdeaux added a 33-yard field goal.
NORFOLK STATE 19, VIRGINIA STATE 7: Delvin Peeks caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Maurice Selby early in the first quarter and Angelo Todd added a pair of touchdown runs to lift the host Spartans (1-0) in the ninth annual Labor Day Classic between the teams. Virginia State is 0-1.
BETHUNE-COOKMAN 17, SAVANNAH STATE 14: Pa'Tell Troutman rushed for 162 yards and two touchdowns and Danny Mathis kicked a 40-yard field goal with 6 minutes 4 seconds remaining as Bethune-Cookman (1-0) won at home. The Tigers fell to 1-1.
SOUTH CAROLINA STATE 20, CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 14: Derrick O'Neal rushed for 153 yards and a touchdown and Craig James threw two touchdown passes to lift the Bulldogs at home in the teams' season opener.
