The Giants' Livan Hernandez left yesterday's game against the Mets with tightness in his rib cage.

The right-hander threw one warm-up pitch in the bottom of the third inning of the scoreless game before grabbing his left side. Manager Dusty Baker and a trainer went to the mound to check Hernandez before taking him out of the game and replacing him with Mark Gardner. X-rays were negative, and he will be re-evaluated when the team returns to San Francisco Thursday.

Hernandez hit a long drive to right field in the top of the third and may have injured himself swinging.

Hernandez (7-11) went two innings, allowed one hit and struck out one.

MOVES: Having lost patience in his offensive ability, the Expos released 3B Shane Andrews following the team's 5-3 loss to the Rockies.

Montreal's first round selection in the 1990 amateur draft, Andrews was hitting .181 with 11 homers and 37 RBI in 281 at-bats.

Andrews, who hit .238 with 25 home runs and 69 RBI last season, all career highs, lost his starting job to rookie Michael Barrett this season. . . .

Chad Hermansen, the Pirates' top prospect, and 3B Aramis Ramirez are among five minor league players who will be added to the team's active roster today.
