Maryland sophomores Taylor Twellman and Nick Downing have been selected as finalists for the Hermann Trophy, which is awarded annually to the outstanding collegiate soccer players in the country.

Twellman, a forward, was Maryland's top scorer last season with 16 goals and eight assists and was named freshman of the year by Soccer America magazine. Downing, a defender, was named to Soccer America's all-freshman team.

They were chosen by a board of coaches and U.S. national team directors. The winner will be announced Dec. 11. . . .

Justine Fisher scored twice as the Navy women's team (3-1) recorded its second shutout with a 4-0 victory at St. Francis (Pa.).

FIELD HOCKEY: Marina DiGiacomo and Marjolijn van der Sommen had two goals each to lead No. 2 Old Dominion (3-0) to a 5-3 upset of top-ranked Maryland in Norfolk. The Terrapins (2-1) got two goals from Caroline Walter and two assists from Carla Tagliente.

FOOTBALL: Alabama LBs Darius Gilbert and Chris Horne have been suspended for Saturday's game against Houston for violating team rules. . . . Vanderbilt reserve OL Brandon Walthour was suspended indefinitely for an unspecified violation of team rules, Coach Woody Widenhofer said. . . .

South Carolina offensive coordinator Skip Holtz, son of Coach Lou Holtz, was hospitalized with stomach pains. "He was in pain Thursday and it kept getting worse," Lou Holtz said.
