Maryland tailback LaMont Jordan (bruised thigh) ran much better during practice yesterday and both he and Coach Ron Vanderlinden said he should be able to play Saturday night against Western Carolina at Byrd Stadium.
"I don't think he's 100 percent right now," Vanderlinden said, "but hopefully he will be by Saturday."
Backup tailback Mookie Sikyala (ankle) will not play Saturday, Vanderlinden said. Right tackle Matt Crawford (knee) practiced for the first time this week, but Tim Howard had about as many snaps with the starters.
Vanderlinden said two freshmen almost certainly will play Saturday. Tailback Bruce Perry worked frequently with the first unit for the third straight practice and wide receiver Scooter Monroe was used extensively with the reserves.
Senior Trey Evans and freshman Latrez Harrison have been backing up Calvin McCall at quarterback. Vanderlinden said Evans would get first call Saturday.
MORRIS ON THE LIST: Maryland junior F Terence Morris is one of 10 players at the top of the list of preseason candidates for the 1999-2000 Naismith college basketball player of the year award. Morris, who averaged 15.3 points and 7.1 rebounds per game last season and is the only returning player to earn first-team all-ACC honors in 1998-99, was among those selected by a vote of the Atlanta Tipoff Club Board of Selectors, made up of basketball coaches, analysts and journalists.
MEN'S SOCCER: Freshman Scott Buete scored the first goal of his college career and added an assist to lead No. 8 Maryland past Marshall, 4-0, in College Park.
Taylor Twellman began the scoring for the Terps just over a minute into the match. Buete scored at the 40:47 mark and A.J. Herrera and Dan Califf each added a goal.
Maryland outshot Marshall 23-5 and Terrapins goalies Christian Lewis and Kevin Schmidt were forced to make just three saves combined.
TWO SUSPENDED: Baylor QB Odell James and DE Charles Foster were suspended for Saturday's game against UNLV, Coach Kevin Steele said. Steele, in his first season, said the players violated team policies but wouldn't elaborate.
