Sophomore Jose Maldonado had a goal and two assists as the George Mason men's soccer team rallied for a 4-4 tie with Portland at the George Mason Classic in Fairfax yesterday. In an earlier game, James Madison and Pennsylvania played to a 2-2 tie. George Mason improved to 1-2-1; Portland and James Madison are 2-0-1. It was the season opener for Pennsylvania.
* VOLLEYBALL: Navy outside hitters Jen Williams and Kara Romanosky, and middle blocker Megan O'Connell, combined to hit .424 in a 15-6, 15-8, 15-4 win over Fairleigh Dickinson in the Navy Volleyball Classic in Annapolis.
* FIELD HOCKEY: Sophomore Caroline Walter scored three goals to lead No. 1 Maryland (3-1) to a 6-3 win at Boston University, which fell to 2-1. . . . Lorraine Vizzuso scored 4 minutes 28 seconds into overtime to give Virginia a 3-2 win in the Cavaliers' home opener. Jessica Coleman, who assisted on Vizzuso's goal, scored Virginia's two regulation goals.
* AWARD FINALIST: Charlotte Davis Quesada, a 1999 graduate of Virginia, is one of 10 finalists for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award, which recognizes intercollegiate athletes for their achievements in athletics, academics and community leadership. Quesada, a rower, graduated with a 3.78 grade-point average.
