The Saints are again waiting to see if RB Ricky Williams can play Sunday or if he'll be out with another ankle injury.

"Realistically, I'd love to have him and he wants to play bad, believe me," Coach Mike Ditka said yesterday. "But if he's not 100 percent, it's probably best to hold him out."

Williams had 40 yards rushing in his NFL debut, but was injured after being tackled by Panthers CB Eric Davis. X-rays showed Williams sprained his left ankle, the same one he injured in the preseason, but in a different place.

INJURY NOTES: Bills RB Thurman Thomas will be sidelined at least six weeks after bruising his liver and kidneys. . . . Lions WR Herman Moore is out indefinitely after spraining a knee. . . . Bengals rookie CB Charles Fisher tore three ligaments in his left knee and is out for the season. . . . Panthers QB Steve Beuerlein has torn cartilage in his left knee but should be able to finish the season with the injury. . . . Giants CB Jason Sehorn, who injured his hamstring in training camp, will practice Wednesday.

COUCH TO START?: Browns Coach Chris Palmer said he might replace starting QB Ty Detmer with Tim Couch for Sunday's game at Tennessee.
