South Lakes All-Met junior cross-country runner Alan Webb was unaware of the Patuxent 3.1-mile course record before entering the 15-team Panther Path Invitational on Saturday. But that was not going to keep him from running his best to break it.

Webb obliterated the previous mark, capturing the individual title in 16 minutes 7 seconds. Previously, senior Carlos Hunt of Westlake had set the mark of 17:59 last fall in a tri-meet.

"The course was pretty hard and I went a little too hard in the beginning [4:53 first mile] . . . I think if I held back a little I could have done better," said Webb, who is the defending Virginia AAA state champion.

Potomac (Va.) won the boys team title, 52 to 68, over South Lakes. The Panthers placed four runners in the top 10, including senior Jason Lewis, who finished second overall in 16:54.

In the girls event, junior Richelle Plotz of Hylton won her first high school invitational meet, also setting a course record by finishing in 20:50. The old meet record was set by senior Alexis Wieroniey of Northern last fall at 21:50.

Hylton also won the girls title, 33 to 50, over Langley. Hylton had all five runners place in the top 12.
