George Mason's women's soccer game against Pennsylvania was postponed yesterday when officials failed to show up for the match in Philadelphia.

A miscommunication between the athletic department and Eastern College Athletic Conference officials was the cause of the problem, a Penn spokeswoman said. . . .

Senior F Jason Cropley scored as the top-ranked Maryland men's soccer team (6-1) defeated Lafayette, 1-0, in College Park. . . . Kyle Martino and Ryan Gibbs scored to lead the 17th-ranked Virginia men (4-2-1) to a 2-1 win over Virginia Tech in Charlottesville.

ALVAREZ SURGERY: Wisconsin football coach Barry Alvarez will undergo knee replacement surgery Oct. 5 because of severe pain that has made him barely able to sleep the past couple of weeks. Alvarez, 52, said the injury would probably keep him off the sideline when the Badgers host No. 4 Michigan Saturday.

A NEW TRADITION: The Wooden Tradition, a new early season college basketball tournament named after Hall of Fame coach John Wooden, will be played at the new Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis each November for at least five years starting in 2000. Purdue, Wooden's alma mater, will face Arizona on Nov. 25, 2000. Notre Dame and Cincinnati will play in the other half of the first doubleheader. Purdue will play in the tournament at least the first three years.
