The best and worst from yesterday's games:

NEWS & NOTES

Dolphins rookie defensive end Dimitrius Underwood was found bleeding on a street in Lansing, Mich., yesterday, and police said he had a life-threatening neck wound.

"He was cut. We're still investigating the nature of the injury," said Sgt. Linda Doherty-Wright, a Lansing police spokeswoman.

After police discovered him on the street about 12:45 p.m., he was taken to a local hospital for surgery. Underwood had been jailed the previous night for failure to pay child support, the Detroit Free Press reported.

The Dolphins, who did not play this weekend, signed Underwood after he was released by the Vikings for disappearing from training camp. Underwood, the 29th overall draft pick, said he had left camp while trying to reconcile a religious calling with his football career.

Underwood did not play in the Dolphins' first two games this season because of a dislocated shoulder.

"Before he had surgery, the hospital said `It doesn't look good' and `He might not make it,"' Doherty-Wright told the Free Press.

Police said they did not know how Underwood sustained his injury. "It's still under investigation, but it's not looking like it was a crime," Doherty-Wright said.

Chandler Injured

Falcons quarterback Chris Chandler was helped off the field with an apparent re-occurrence of a hamstring injury during the second quarter of their 35-7 loss to the Rams.

Chandler was injured without contact with 3 minutes 13 seconds to go and the Falcons trailing, 28-0. After making a couple of pump fakes and scrambling, he crumpled to the turf.

Chandler missed last week's game with a hamstring injury suffered in the Falcons' season-opening loss to Minnesota.

Manning Sets Mark

Colts QB Peyton Manning broke Johnny Unitas's team single-game passing record, passing for 404 yards against the Chargers, who had the NFL's third-best defense entering the game. Unitas had 401 yards against Atlanta on Sept. 17, 1967, nine years before Manning was born.

"It's special because of the quarterbacks they've had here, especially John Unitas," he said.

Manning passed for two touchdowns and added the first rushing score of his career in the Colts' 27-19 win.
