Reserve place kicker Josh Frankel made a 27-yard field goal in the third overtime Saturday night as Oregon ended one of the wildest games in its history with a 33-30 upset of then-No. 16 Southern California in a Pacific-10 game in Eugene, Ore.

Frankel's winning kick came after the Trojans' David Newbury missed two field goals, one in the first overtime and the second from 37 yards in the third extra period.

"We just self-destructed at every turn," Southern California Coach Paul Hackett said.

A.J. Feeley threw three touchdown passes for the Ducks (3-1, 1-0) and Nathan Villegas made a 26-yard field goal with 33 seconds remaining in regulation to tie it at 23.

However, he was injured in the post-kick celebration, and Frankel replaced him.

Southern California (2-1, 0-1), which committed 21 penalties for 178 yards, fell out of the Associated Press top 25. The win moved Oregon to No. 25.

Pulling Rank All Over

It was not a stable weekend for the top 25. Eight ranked teams lost and six new teams made the poll, including Virginia (3-1) at No. 24. East Carolina (4-0) upset then-No. 9 Miami, 27-23, and moved to No. 19. Alabama (3-0) advanced to No. 21 with its 35-28 win over then-No. 14 Arkansas. The Hurricanes (2-2) slipped to No. 18; the Razorbacks (2-1) to No. 20.

Holtz at a Loss

Lou Holtz's return to the sideline has had little impact so far. South Carolina, shut out for the second time in four games in a 17-0 loss to host Mississippi State, has scored 12 points en route to an 0-4 start--Holtz's worst start in 27 years of coaching.

Major Applewhite passed for 333 yards and three touchdowns and Hodges Mitchell scored three touchdowns to lead Texas to a 62-0 win over Baylor (0-4, 0-2 Big 12) in Waco, Tex. The Longhorns (4-1, 1-0) moved from No. 22 to No. 15. The Bears, who suffered their worst loss since 1913, have dropped 10 straight and are off to their worst start in 21 years. . . .

Marshall's Chad Pennington, slammed hard to the turf on the second play against Temple, rebounded to complete 26 of 36 passes for 406 yards and three touchdowns before leaving in the third quarter in the No. 17 Thundering Herd's 34-0 win over the Owls (0-4) in Huntington, W. Va. Pennington led Marshall (4-0) to its 27th straight home win with his third career 400-yard passing game.
