The NHL suspended Blackhawks D Dave Manson for one exhibition game and fined him $1,000 as a result of a match penalty against Capitals F Steve Konowalchuk last Saturday. Manson was assessed an attempting-to-injure match penalty after he cross-checked Konowalchuk in the second period.
Manson served the suspension when he missed the Blackhawks' exhibition game against the Blues on Monday night.
JONES RECOVERING: Flyers RW Keith Jones will miss three to six weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, the team said. Prior to his injury, Jones was expected to start the season on Philadelphia's top line with Eric Lindros and John LeClair.
DAIGLE RELEASED: Alexandre Daigle, the top overall pick in the 1993 NHL draft, was released by the Lightning. Daigle, 24, was only 18 when the Senators signed him for more than $12 million in a five-year deal. He went directly from his junior club to the NHL, but failed to live up to expectations.
"What we want to see is a certain amount of passion for the game on a consistent basis," Lightning GM Rick Dudley said.
CAPTAIN B: RW Kelly Buchberger, who spent the past four years as captain of the Oilers, will be the first captain for the expansion Thrashers.
