Stars C Mike Modano was sidelined indefinitely after suffering a concussion, breaking his nose and straining neck ligaments when Mighty Ducks D Ruslan Salei hit him into the boards from behind.

Modano left the ice on a stretcher Saturday and was taken to Baylor Medical Center in Dallas. He was held overnight and released yesterday.

Modano will be re-evaluated in the next three to five days but won't play in Detroit on Tuesday, the team said.

Neither will D Darryl Sydor, who broke his left eye socket in a fight with Anaheim's Jim McKenzie. Sydor also is out indefinitely. Sydor got hurt when he came to the aid of C Joe Nieuwendyk, who was checked hard into the end boards by Mighty Ducks D Pascal Trepanier. Nieuwendyk wasn't seriously injured and returned to the game.

The game tape and a medical report were being sent to the NHL for review.

"I think those two players are either the stupidest people in this league or they just brought themselves a hell of a war," Stars Coach Ken Hitchcock said, referring to Salei and Trepanier. "These were reckless plays and cheap shots."

The two teams meet again Friday in Anaheim.

DAIGLE TRADED: The Lightning traded C Alexander Daigle to the Rangers. Daigle had been on loan to Providence of the American Hockey League. Daigle had six goals and six assists in 32 games with the Lightning last season.
