Monte Stokes caught a 31-yard touchdown pass from Craig James with two seconds remaining to rally South Carolina State to a 27-23 victory over Norfolk State yesterday in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game in Orangeburg, S.C.

The Bulldogs' Derek O'Neal, the conference's leading rusher, had a career high 34 carries for 172 yards. He scored on runs of 1, 15 and 4 yards. South Carolina State improved to 3-2, 1-1. The Spartans dropped to 1-4, 0-4.

BETHUNE-COOKMAN 26, JOHNSON C. SMITH 6: The Wildcats' smothering defense limited the Golden Bulls (1-5) to 113 offensive yards en route to the home win. Bethune-Cookman improved to 4-2 but lost quarterback Patell Troutman to a concussion in the second quarter.

NORTH CAROLINA A&T 41, HAMPTON 24: Maurice Smith rushed for 142 yards to lead the Aggies in Greensboro, N.C. Roy Johnson completed 17 of 35 passes for 235 yards and two interceptions for the Pirates, who fell to 4-2, 2-1. North Carolina A&T is 4-1, 2-0.

MORGAN STATE 28, TOWSON 22: Willie McGirt passed for 199 yards and two touchdowns as the Bears (1-3) won at home. The Tigers fell to 4-1.
