The Celtics announced plans to honor Red Auerbach's 50 years with the team with special events throughout the season.
Auerbach, 82, coached the Celtics between 1950 and 1966, and led the team to nine titles, including eight in a row (1959-1966). He became general manager in 1968 and president in 1970. He retired as general manager in 1984 but remains president.
The celebrations will begin at the 23rd annual B'nai B'rith Tap-off Dinner on Oct. 26, when Auerbach will be recognized for his contribution to the Celtics and the NBA. Before the Celtics' first home game against Washington Nov. 3, he will be honored for his role in the team's 16 titles.
ROSTERS: 76ers F-C Theo Ratliff, a second-team NBA all-defense selection last season, is expected to miss at least the first week of the regular season because of a stress fracture in his left ankle. Ratliff will be out of action for three weeks and then will be reevaluated.
Free agent C Stanley Roberts signed a $725,000, one-year contract with the 76ers, who waived G Rowan Barrett. . . .
