The Nets signed G Sherman Douglas to a multiyear contract, bringing the free agent back after a one-year stint with the Clippers. Douglas, 33, spent the 1997-98 season with the Nets, averaging 8.2 points and 4.1 assists. He joined the Clippers after he was unable to reach agreement on a new contract with New Jersey. The Nets instead signed G Eric Murdock, who was a disappointment and since has been traded to the Clippers.

Douglas (Spingarn High) also has played for the Heat, Celtics and Bucks in his career. He was taken by Miami in the second round of the 1989 draft out of Syracuse. The 6-foot-1 Douglas has averaged 11.6 points and 6.4 assists in his career. . . .

The Lakers signed G Brian Shaw.

KUKOC OUT: Toni Kukoc will miss the Bulls' preseason game today with tendinitis in his right knee.

Kukoc, the only marquee player left from the Bulls' championship teams, was 1 of 8 in Chicago's 100-85 loss to the Kings Tuesday. He didn't play in the fourth quarter and said afterward the knee "wasn't good."

"Our trainers and our doctors both think, with medicine, it's the type of injury that will go away. It won't need surgery," Coach Tim Floyd said.

Kukoc's knee became inflamed last week. An MRI exam on Monday revealed the tendinitis, and Floyd said some time off might reduce the swelling.
