Bill Parcells insisted yesterday the Jets have not abandoned Kevin Williams, the defensive back who is on a respirator with a mysterious throat and lung infection.
Parcells took exception to the portrayal of the team's conduct by Jerome Stanley, Williams's agent. Stanley contends the Jets have not showed enough concern for Williams, who is in intensive care at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York.
Stanley said the team put Williams on the reserve, nonfootball injury list so it wouldn't have to pay his client for the rest of the season.
"We've never had a grievance filed here in three years," Parcells said. "That's because we try to do what we think is in everyone's best interest all the time, and I would charge you to find many other teams that can make that statement."
DAWSON QUESTIONABLE: All-Pro C Dermontti Dawson didn't practice because of the first serious in-season injury of his 12-year career and may miss the Steelers' game Monday against the Falcons.
BLANCHARD SIGNED: The Giants signed former Redskins K Cary Blanchard, two days after Brad Daluiso tore a knee ligament on the final play of a game against the Cowboys.
